Nutraceuticals

The term, coined in 1989 by the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine in the United States, is defined as “a substance that may be a food or part of a food that provides medicinal benefits, including disease prevention or treatment”.

The term nutraceuticals, however, can be referred to as a bioactive substance, which would be the most compatible official definition. A bioactive substance is defined as nutrients or non-nutrients that have a specific metabolic or physiological action.

Dietary habits are one of the most important non-genetic factors for longevity.

Some foods contain bioactive compounds that can help prevent diseases and can be marketed in different pharmaceutical presentations such as capsules or tablets, for example.
